Where Jacksonville goes
for Marriage Counseling and Couples Therapy
Save your marriage or relationship today with Jacksonville marriage counseling or couples therapy at D’Arienzo Psychology. Did you know that only about one fourth of divorcing couples report seeking professional help to improve their marriage? Because of stigma with getting professional help and wishful thinking that things will improve (without more drastic measures), most couples wait an average of six years after serious problems develop before they seek marriage counseling. In fact only about 10 percent of married couples ever seek assistance from marriage counselors and psychologists.
If you are reading this, you are likely considering seeing a marriage counselor or psychologist specializing in relationship and marital problems. We hope that you continue reading this important information. Many couples who go to counseling consider it a last ditch effort to save the marriage while they are considering divorce; however, there are many who are not considering divorce but just want to improve communication, intimacy, and the ability to manage conflict.
The most common reasons for seeking professional help are a lack of emotional affection and poor communication issues followed by divorce and separation concerns. Other reasons couples seek counseling include arguments, concerns about children, sex life problems, personal problems, pornography addiction, and trust issues like infidelity.
It is unfortunate that more couples don’t seek the guidance of a professional couples counselor or psychologist before significant problems become permanent aspects of the relationship. It is difficult to alter the course of a relationship that has been plagued by problems for many years. However, there is good news from the psychologists who conduct couples therapy research. The research does suggest that about 75% of couples who receive marriage counseling are better off than similar couples who do not following their participation in marital therapy. In couples counseling, partners learn how to effectively communicate with each other and understand how to increase certain aspects of their relationship that are associated with high quality marriages. Respect, openness, genuineness, trust, emotional connection, and support typically improve when both parties are committed to better the relationship. Again, communication improves with therapy when couples no longer feel unsafe in their marital relationship.

Additional Couples Therapy Handouts for Self Care
We have assembled a grouping of handouts for you in the event you are going through difficult times in your relationship. Often a significant crisis such as infidelity, financial problems, or the threat of divorce brings couples to therapy. The process of marriage counseling and the presenting crisis can certainly be very stressful. It is important that each person takes care of their own psychological and physical needs during the process so both are less like to experience fight or flight reactions inside and outside of therapy. If each party practices good self care they will improve their ability to resolve conflict and see the other person as they once did. I have therefore provided handouts for deep breathing exercises that should be practiced daily and when communicating, and tips to help with sleep, tips to help with stress management and anxiety, and tips to help with depression. These worksheets should absolutely be used whether you are in therapy or not.
